Signposts: Daily Devotions

…In order that we may share his holiness.
—Hebrews 12:10b

We often find ourselves standing outside the tent of holiness. After scanning our life, we  determine that there's so much negative clutter, we can't possibly accept the invitation to enter. We treat the tent of holiness as an exclusive club for those who are perfect.

Even when we have a standing invitation to come in, we hang back, procrastinate about turning in our R.S.V.P., find ourselves wanting to hide or retreat into the background. "Others can go to that party," we tell ourselves. We have no desire to deceive ourselves or others. We are not perfect and we know it.

Perhaps, it isn't perfection but rather making the moments of life sacred that occasions the invitation into the tent. Perhaps we're being invited into the tent—being offered the opportunity to share in God's holiness—because somewhere in our life we are doing what God does; we are doing some "sacred-making."

We make the moments of life sacred when we are mindful of our words and actions, when we give our full attention to those moments, when we are aware of the Giver of those moments.  If we can see simple holiness not as perfection but as making things sacred, we might just go into the tent after all.

Gracious God, let the moments of my life be the holy ground upon which I take off my shoes.
