And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.
—1 Corinthians 3:18

We often tread the avenues of life wearing a mask that not only keeps us hidden from others, but from ourselves as well. Weeks, months, and years go by without our ever noticing that we share God's image, that we are in the process of being transformed, that we are being filled by degrees with glory.

Because we do not see ourselves as we truly are, we interact with our known world with a diminished capacity for faith in our own goodness.  We are blind to the Spirit of heaven that swirls in us with delight and abandon.

Then without even a hint of forewarning, we are catapulted out of the familiarity of our blindness by a sudden glimpse of the Holy One. We see God's glory in the world about us, or in the face of someone we love, or in the work we have been given to do, and in that glory we recognize our own true self. The self that was created by the hand of heaven, marked with the image of heaven, chosen to be one of heaven's own.

In that moment, we see a trace of God’s immensity and wonder, because it is as if we have just seen ourselves for the first time. The glory that Spirit has poured upon us is unmistakable, and we are free to live from our soul with grace.

Gracious God, let me live as if I believe that I am being changed from glory into glory.
