Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.
—Luke 10:20

It's easy to be amazed at signs and wonders that occur in our lives. When we see physical things altered because of our faith, or supernatural events happening that are beyond our capacity to create, or see that our faith has had power over evil, we are astonished and sometimes even dumbfounded.

We are so accustomed to life rolling along on a steady track, at times too dull and monotonous for our taste, that when we are awakened from that dullness by something miraculous and out of the ordinary, we find our bodies charged with new energy, and our souls deepened in belief.

As important as it is to have our faith strengthened by experiences that leave us filled with awe, a more sublime joy is knowing that we matter to the heart of God. The prophet Isaiah said that our names are written on the palm of God's hand. What an incredible image that is!

To be known fully and to be held in the timelessness of God imparts a joy that runs through every cell of our body, even to the very depth of our human existence. There is nothing in all of daily life that has ultimate power over us when we exist in the knowledge of that joy.

O God, keep my soul focused on my union with you where ultimate joy is to be found.
