After twenty years as a professional dancer and choreographer, Sally moved from New York City to Memphis, Tennessee. When progressive nerve damage as a result of childhood polio limited use of one of her hands, She began studying at the Memphis College of Art in order to train her other hand. She is now a full time painter and collage artist. Markell was awarded a Bronze Metal from the Royal Horticulture Society in London in 2005 for Botanical Art, and will have an exhibition at the Memphis Botanical Garden in April 2006.
